WILLIAM EDWARD HUGHES January 20, 1930 - April 23, 2003 It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of their beloved husband, father, and grandfather Bill Hughes on Wednesday, April 23, 2003 at the age of 73 at the Victoria General Hospital. Bill was predeceased by his sisters, Gwladys, Betty and brother Dan. Bill leaves to cherish his many memories, his wife of 52 years Lorna; daughters, Catherine (Larry) Mudge, Nancy Hughes (Gerry Kaplan) son Brian (Susan) eight grandchildren; two brothers, Ivor (Olive), John (Mabel), as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Bill was a long time resident of Fort Rouge and attended Lord Roberts and Kelvin High School. In 1950 he married Lorna Paton and together they settled on Kylemore Avenue to raise their family. He started his career as an apprentice carman with the CNR in 1947 where he remained employed until his early retirement in 1985. Most of these 38 years were spent in the shops at Symington where he also worked on the auxiliary crew doing on-call roadwork. Many of Bills close friendships were formed with his coworkers and he cherished his time off to hunt and fish with them. He was a member of the Fort Garry and the Fort Rouge Curling Clubs where he enjoyed the sport of curling and played for many years. An active outdoorsman, he built a cottage on Malachi Lake as a family project in 1952. The summers were spent tending to the property and relaxing on the veranda. He was a gifted carpenter and as the family grew he continually upgraded the cottage, using salvaged material and hand tools to add docks, boathouses and sheds. He always had one comment as he settled into his favourite chair to look out at the lake. "This is living!". The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff at the Victoria Hospital, especially Joyce, and Blanca. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 28 at the Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. (south of the Royal Canadian Mint) with a gathering of family and friends in the reception centre. According to Bills wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family interment will be held. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Victoria General Hospital Foundation Medicine and Miracles campaign, 2340 Pembina Hwy., Winnipeg, MB R3T 2E8, or to ones charity of choice. Arrangements entrusted to: GLEN LAWN FUNERAL HOME 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. 982-7550
