JASDEV SINGH GREWAL On the evening of Wednesday, April 2, 2003, Jasdev Singh Grewal passed away peacefully at his home in Calgary, AB at the age of 69 years. A Sikh funeral service was held on Saturday, April 5, followed by a prayer service on Saturday, April 12, both in Calgary. Following the completion of his legal education and a successful practice in India, Jasdev Singh moved to London, England and graduated as a Barrister-at-Law from the prestigious Lincolns Inn in 1971. In October of 1972, Jasdev Singh moved to Winnipeg, MB and became a member of the Law Society of Manitoba shortly thereafter. In April of 1977, he joined the Land Titles Office system in Manitoba, retiring from his position as District Registrar of the Brandon Land Titles Office in December of 2000. During his time in Manitoba, Jasdev Singh served as a Bencher with the Law Society of Manitoba from 1982 to 1994. In 1994, he was bestowed with the honour of Life Bencher with the Law Society of Manitoba, becoming the first Sikh lawyer to achieve this status within in any law society in Canada. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Jasdev Singh was an active member of the Sikh community, acting in a consultative capacity on many issues, such as the federal kirpan case of 1998. Jasdev Singh served in various board capacities for many community organizations, including the Sikh Society of Manitoba and the World Sikh Organization. Since his retirement and move to Calgary in 2000, he was able to devote more time to raising awareness of the Sikh religion through participation in radio programs and writing articles for several publications. Jasdev Singh will be remembered and missed by all those whose lives he touched, particularly his wife, Surjit Kaur Grewal, daughter, Prabhjote (Jyoti) Kaur Gondek, and son-in-law, Todd Gondek.
