MARY SUMNER After a courageous battle with cancer, it is with deep sorrow that our family announces the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Mary Sumner, at the St. Boniface Hospital on Thursday, April 24, 2003. She is survived by her son Walter (Barb) Sumner and grand-children, Jonathan and Lindsay; daughter Doris (Grant) Rose and grandchildren, Kristin and Ian; daughter Shelley and grandchildren, Carley and Amanda. She was predeceased by her husband Ken Sumner; sisters, Estelle, Pauline, Fran, Helen; and brothers, Walter, Mike, Tony and Joe. Mom was born December 17, 1916 in Montreal and with her family moved to Eden, MB in 1918 to homestead. She was the second eldest of nine children and began working to help support her family at a very young age. She never forgot the lessons learned from the poverty of her childhood; thrift, hard work and courage. In June 1937 Mom married Ken Sumner, as aspiring CPR engineer. Due to job opportunities they moved from Neepawa to Winnipeg a few years later. Mom lived the remainder of her life in Winnipeg. Mom spent most of her years as a homemaker and caregiver for her family. Mom and Dad were married 31 years, but in 1968, Dad suffered a fatal heart attack, leaving Mom to be the sole provider for their family. In the early 1970s a new door opened for Mom as she discovered her passion for travel. Several of her travels were enjoyed with family and friends. Mom will always be remembered as a wonderful giving person, whether it be a knitted afghan (her trademark), a batch of perogies (her specialty), or a warm visit over tea. She was a compassionate lady who willingly gave of her time to those in need. We cannot see you, but we know you are beside us. We can no longer touch you, but we are touched by you. We can no longer talk to you, but we will always remember your words. Our family wishes to thank our many friends and relatives who freely gave of their time and offered their support and assistance during the past three and one half years. In the early stages of her illness, Mom received considerate care and attention from Dr. I. Maxwell and the Oncology staff at the Victoria General Hospital. Also to be thanked is Dr. Crawford and the wonderful caring staff in the Palliative Care Unit at the St. Boniface Hospital. If friends so desire, donations in Moms memory may be made to CancerCare Manitoba or a charity of ones choice. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. on Friday, May 2 at 10:00 a.m. Reception to follow. A graveside service will follow at 3:30 p.m. at Riverside Cemetery in Neepawa, MB. Arrangements entrusted to: GLEN LAWN FUNERAL HOME 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. 982-7550
