EVALD JAAN ASU It is with deepest sadness that the family announces the passing of Evald Jaan Asu on May 1, 2003 at the Grace Hospital. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Edith; his daughter Carmen; his son and daughter-in-law, Harald and Vicki and his grandsons Devan and Matti. Evald was born in Tartu, Estonia on April 23, 1918. He immigrated to Winnipeg in 1948. Two years later, he was joined by Edith. After their marriage on May 6, 1950, Evald and Edith lived in the west end of Winnipeg for over 50 years. They were welcomed into a warm, caring community at Vasa Lund in June 2002. Evald was an upholsterer by trade. In 1972, he became self-employed and found running his own business rewarding. He was a true craftsman known for his meticulous workmanship. Dads passion was fishing. He loved to be outdoors and spent many days by the lakes and rivers of Manitoba followed by many days smoking Goldeye. He took great joy sharing both the stories and the fish with friends. In 1974, Evald was diagnosed with heart disease. He was one of the founding members of Reh-Fit and it was his commitment to exercise that allowed him to live a healthy, active life. "George" continued to play volleyball into his 80s. Throughout his life, Evald had a soft spot for animals. Pets were always considered one of the family. He fed and sheltered many of the neighborhood strays. He lived life with optimism and humour. In spite of many challenges, Opa frequently said, "If I had to live my life over again, I wouldnt change a thing." The promise for Evald and Ediths lives together was realized through the faith, love and strength in their marriage. He delighted in the successes of his children and grandchildren. Devan and Matti will fondly remember his playful teasing. As a husband, father and Opa, he was committed in thought and deed to the ideal that family comes first. Evalds family wishes to thank friends for their support, especially during the past year. A service will be held at St. Peters Lutheran Church, 65 Walnut St. at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 7. If friends desire, a donation may be made in his memory to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 5 Kent St., Winnipeg, MB R2L 1X3, 982-2041. NEIL BARDAL INC. 949-2200
