JOHN HAROLD BELOWS Peacefully at his home in Fort Myers, FL on April 24, 2003, in his 89th year. Born on June 19, 1914 in Winnipeg, MB to John and Mary Belows. Predeceased by his parents; first wife Denise; sisters, Evelyn and Arlene; brother Arthur; and his second wife Mary. Survived and will be remembered with love by sisters, Elsie Dean (Art), Dorothy Blain (David), and Margaret Jarvis (Mel) as well as numerous nieces and nephews. John grew up in the area of Morris, MB. Along with being a member of the Canadian Forces, he also held a variety of jobs until the 1940s when, along with his brother Art, went into business for himself, and started a successful heavy construction company called Belows Bros. Ltd. Shortly after selling the business in 1974, John and Denise retired to Fort Myers. For many years, John was an active Rotary Member - he never missed a meeting and even attended sessions when he was on business trips away from home. He was a self appointed promoter of many causes and always displayed a true zest for life. He had a passion for politics and a real sense of community. John was instrumental in the development of the St. James Assiniboia Historical Museum, which is still open today. He always enjoyed a good debate, and showed a keen interest on issues that affected his community. These attributes eventually led him to serve as Mayor of Assiniboia in the early 1960s. John was a person who made a difference, he inspired many individuals and worked with a number of groups and organizations over the years. He was a real people person and showed an interest in everyone he met. He will be fondly remembered by many. A private service will be held in Fort Myers. If so desired, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
