Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDONALD W. ROBERTSON Peacefully on May 1, 2003 Donald William Robert Robertson died at Cartwright, MB. Donnie, as he was affectionately called, the youngest child of Robert H. and Annie Robertson was born in Cartwright on December 10, 1909. He was raised on the family farm with his sisters, Helena, Jennie, Roberta, Florence and his brother Alex. He is the beloved uncle of numerous nieces and nephews. Don farmed with his brother Alex but took a break from farming to join the Navy during the Second World War where he served aboard corvettes in the North Atlantic. Donnie has been a Legion member for nearly 60 years and a strong supporter of the Cartwright United Church. Dons great passion was sports of all varieties. He played hockey and baseball as a young man and really enjoyed curling and golf as a participant and spectator. With his prodigious memory Don could name all the players in the NHL and the major baseball leagues. He delighted in the fact that he attended the Subway series between the Yankees and Dodgers during the 1950s and came home with great numbers of pennants and baseball caps. Don was an avid curler and participated in many bonspiels well into his 80s. He enjoyed meeting all the curling fans from across the country as he attended many Briers. Donnie was supportive of the various local Cartwright sports teams and reveled in the play of each successive generation. He drove a school bus in the 1970s and had a soft spot for all the children taking a vital interest in their lives. Uncle Dons nephews and nieces will always remember he had what he called "chicken feed" in his pants pockets. That was change which he gave them to buy treats at Davidsons Drug Store. Everyone who visited his home enjoyed a treat of candy. Dons great memory for people, places and events and his wry sense of humour accompanied by that twinkle in his eye has resulted in much joy and laughter. The family wishes to thank the community of Cartwright, Dr Pio, Ivy Turner and all the staff at the hospital for their love and care especially in the last four years. He would never have wanted to live any other place and will be sorely missed by all. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations can be made to the Cartwright United Church of the Cartwright Foundation. The funeral service will be held at the Cartwright United Church on Wednesday, May 14 at 11:00 a.m.
