SONIA FLACKMAN The family of Sonia ("Bob") Flackman (Czuzoj) sadly announces her passing on April 26, 2003 at Seven Oaks Hospital. Sonia was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Dave, and siblings, Abrasha, Yitzchak, and Zelda. She is survived by children, Gwen (Sid) Nelko and Sid Flackman; grandchildren, Trevor (Rochelle), Marni, Moshe, Rachael, Abby, and Ben; and great-grandchildren, Tristan and Dylan. A woman of valour, rare insight, and gentle compassion, Sonia was blessed with unique talent. She was raised in Vilna and immigrated to Canada in her late teens. Her objective of saving her family from the impending Holocaust was thwarted, as were so many others, by the policies of the Canadian Immigration Branch. With tenacious perseverance, Sonia began her career as a Hebrew teacher and tutor in the early 1930s at the Winnipeg Hebrew Free School (Talmud Torah), winning the respect of students, fellow teachers and the community at large. Sonia chose to lead her life with dignity, self-reliance, and a knowledge of who she was and what she was. She was an example to all that chose to observe. She will be greatly missed by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. "My Baba came into this world like a lion, And left this world like a lion, And a lion she will stay, forever."... Abby. Rabbi P. Weizman officiated at the graveside service, held at the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery on Monday, April 28. Pallbearers were Trevor Nelko, Moshe Flackman, and Ben Flackman, Sidney Schwartz, Harry Lakser, Lawrence Goldstine.
