DOMENICO CALIGIURI August 20, 1921 - May 10, 2003 It is with great sadness that the family of Domenico Caligiuri announces his peaceful passing at the Victoria General Hospital at the age of 81 years. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Guiseppina; his sons, Frank Caligiuri and Tony (Gail) Caligiuri; his daughter Angie (Guy) Bongiorno; his daughter-in-law Betty Caligiuri; his grandchildren, Domenic (Sophia) Caligiuri, Tania (Gabriel) Avila, Lesley Caligiuri, and Madeline and Joselyn Bongiorno; his sisters-in-law, Angelina Caligiuri, Caterina Gagliardi, Caterina Scarpino, Concetta Grande, and Francesca Torchia. He was predeceased by his parents, Domenico and Angelina Caligiuri; grandson David Caligiuri; brothers, Gaetano, Frank (Maria), Pietro and Guiseppe (Felice) Caligiuri; and his sisters, Eugenia (Angelo) Tallarico and Carmela Caligiuri; brothers-in-law, Tommaso Gagliardi, Carmine Scarpino, Guiseppe Grande, and Antonio Torchia; and by his sister-in-law Giovanna (Pasquale) Mottola. Domenico was born on August 20, 1921 in Amato, Italy. In Italy, he served during the Second World War and was a prisoner of war in Germany for three years. In 1949, he immigrated to Canada, followed by his wife and first son, Frank in 1950. He started working at CN Rail, followed by 17 years of service with Domtar (Gypsum Lime) and then 19 years as a custodian at the University of Manitoba. He was a hard-working person who was never without a job to support his family. He stayed actively employed till his retirement in 1986. Domenico was passionate about gardening, from germinating his own seedlings for his vegetable and herb garden, cultivating and grafting bountiful varieties of fruit trees, grape vines and berry bushes to landscaping his yard with an abundant variety of beautiful flowers and shrubbery. Even more than growing the product, he enjoyed sharing the fruits of his labour with friends, family and neighbours. He was equally passionate of wine-making, whether it be from his own grown grapes or grapes ordered from the California vineyards. Domenicos other hobbies included Bocci Ball, Briscola, weekends at the beach and socializing with friends and family. He enjoyed life and always made time to help a friend or a family member in need. He was an unselfish man who always provided for his family before his own personal needs. The source of our fathers joy was his familys happiness and health. The family extends special thanks to the 3 East Nursing staff, the Rehab staff and Dr. Engels at the Deer Lodge Centre. Also, a special thanks to Dr. Pacin and the 4th and 5th Floor staffs at the Victoria General Hospital. Prayer service will be held at the Mary Mother of The Church Roman Catholic Church, 85 Kirkbridge Dr. in Fort Garry, on Wednesday, May 14 at 7:30 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at Mary Mother of the Church the following morning, Thursday, May 15 at 10:00 a.m. Father Carl J. Tarnopolski will preside over the services. Entombment will take place in the Chapel of Eternal Memories Mausoleum, 1501 Waverley, following the mass. Active pallbearers will be Natale Caligiuri, Frank Masi, Joe Cardamone, Tom Rossi, Domenic Caligiuri (grandson), and Gabriel Avila. Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Caligiuri, Tony Scarpino (Medicine Hat, AB), Frank Torchia, Tony Gagliardi (Spruce Grove, AB), Tony Grande, and Domenic Caligiuri (nephew).
