Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHILJA SONYA Hilja Sonya (nee Mikk), born October 4, 1925 in Parnu, Estonia, died peacefully May 11, 2003 in White Rock, BC. She leaves to mourn, her daughters, Dorothy (husband Bo and children Eryka and Emma) and Cathy (husband Perry and children Teigan and Lauren) her nephew Alec and family; her niece Tina and family; and all her dear friends around the world. Though she was born and raised in Estonia, the Second World War eventually brought her, via an unbelievable journey, to Winnipeg, MB in 1948. Her incredible fortitude and zest for life enabled her to bring her mother, sister, niece and nephew to Canada while studying English and nursing, and working in a TB sanatorium. She met and married Steve, our dear father, in 1956 after which they moved to Steinbach, MB. There, Hilja gave up her nursing career to work side-by-side with her husband in his veterinary practice and to dedicate her life to her family and friends. She selflessly helped all those around her with loyalty and devotion. Her love of music, theatre, books and the outdoors was passed on and shared with her family and friends. She showed, throughout her life, her belief in God, her courage and bravery, even through all the pain and to the very end. May her wonderful memory live on in all of us who were loved and touched by her gracious life. She was our angel on earth and remains, eternally, an angel in heaven. We will miss you every day, though you will never be far away! A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 17 at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, 2340-148th Street, South Surrey. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Canadian/BC Cancer Society.
