GERALD FRANK MARTENS Gerald Frank Martens (better known as Jerry) was born in Rivers, MB on July 31, 1955 the second son of John and Lena Martens. He passed away in Penticton, BC on May 18, 2003 at the age of 47. Jerry enjoyed learning and attended school in Rivers, graduating in 1973. Through grades 1 through 8 he missed only a half day of school!! He went on to attend the Brandon Mental Health Centre School of Nursing and graduated as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse in 1975. He worked at Brandon Mental Health Centre for 17 years, one year at Rideau Park Personal Care Home and then moved to Penticton where he continued to work as a psychiatric nurse until 2001. He took great pleasure in his work and really enjoyed both the staff and the clients he worked with. Jerry loved sports - both watching professional sports and playing the game. He especially enjoyed playing baseball, hockey, volleyball and golf. Anyone who knew him knows that his favourite team was the Toronto Maple Leafs. Each year he could be heard to say that this is the year they will win the Stanley cup. He will be sadly missed by his mother and step father Lena and Elmer Dyck of Brandon, brother Rick Martens and Joann of Winnipeg, sister Kathy Friesen and Bruce of Morden. Also one nephew, Bobby Martens of Winnipeg, and three nieces, Nicole Martens of Winnipeg and Kristin and Danielle Friesen of Morden. Other very special people in his life were his cousins, Gary, Bill, and Dale Kroeger and his special friend Bev Simpson of British Columbia. He was predeceased by his father, John F. Martens in 1974, and his grandparents, Frank and Mary Martens, Dick and Agatha Fast all of Rivers, MB. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be held Saturday, May 24 at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Mennonite Church, 951 10th St. in Brandon. Interment will be at Rivers Mennonite Cemetery.
