JANET LORI SMOOK (nee THOMPSON) On May 17, 2003, after a long and courageous battle with cancer, Janet peacefully passed away at the Vita Hospital, with her family by her side. Janet was the beloved wife to Brian, cherished mother to their two sons, Scott and Troy, and the loving daughter to Douglas and Margaret Thompson. Janet is also survived by her siblings, Shelley (Mark) Hebel and their children, Paula and Eric; Curtis (Betty) Thompson and their children, Taniele and Carly; Paul (JoAnne) Thompson and their children, Lauren and Ryan; her in-laws, Steve and Mildred Smook; Larry (Elsie) Smook and their children, Jeff and Tammy; Dennis (Gwen) Smook and their children, Christopher, Justin, Tyson and Brandyn; Wayne (Paulette) Smook and their son, Blair; and Wendy (Michael) Bataluk, as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins. Janet was born on July 26, 1957 in Roseau, MN and enjoyed her youth in Piney, MB. She received her High School diploma from Shevchenko School in Vita and graduated with a Bachelor of Education from the University of Winnipeg. Janet married Brian in 1981, and they settled in Vita, MB, where they pursued their teaching careers and raised their children. Janets most precious memories were shared with her husband Brian and their two children, Scott and Troy. To Janet, family always came first. Her world revolved around her children and their busy schedules. She loved life and she lived it to the fullest. She enjoyed camping, golfing and social evenings singing around the campfire with family and friends. Janet possessed the treasured quality to discover the positive and the good in every individual and every life experience she encountered. This quality left its mark on those of us who had the privilege to share in her life. Janet touched the lives and hearts of many students throughout the span of over 20 years in her teaching career. She will be fondly remembered by her students for her dedication to coaching track, basketball and her involvement in other sporting and school activities. Janets compassion and love for her students led her to a new and treasured calling as a Guidance Counselor. Janets legacy to her students turned anxiety to a smile, idle hands to working hands and frustration to success while never hesitating to offer support and friendship. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the doctors and staff at Vita District Hospital, Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach and Cancer Care at the Grace Hospital for their excellent care and compassion. We would also like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Karen Humphries, Lois Janzen and Maggie Smith for their compassion and commitment to her care. Prayers will be said at Loewen Funeral Chapel in Steinbach on Wednesday, May 21, 7:30 p.m. followed by funeral services on Thursday, May 22, 10:30 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Vassar with Rev. Fr. Tomasz Jagierski officiating. Interment will follow in the Wampum Cemetery. Pallbearers for the service will be Mark Hebel, Curtis Thompson, Paul Thompson, Larry Smook, Dennis Smook and Wayne Smook. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Vita and District Health Centre or CancerCare Manitoba. Rest in Peace "We love you, and well miss you forever" LOEWEN Funeral Chapel 5 Chrysler Gate - Steinbach - 326-1351
