Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryVIOLET ETHEL MEAD OAKES (BUTTERFIELD) Peacefully, May 16, 2003, Violet Oakes passed away with family at her side. Vi was predeceased by her beloved husband of 61 years, Mitch, on August 11, 2002. She will be lovingly remembered by her family: Lorna (Murray) McKnight, Mitch (Marg) Oakes; grandchildren: Robert, Lindsay and Craig McKnight; Jennifer (Garrett) Verch, Melanie, Allison and Rebecca Oakes. Vi is survived by her sisters, Kay Thatcher and Brenda Russell, and brothers, Ray, Bill and Ed Butterfield. Born January 29, 1910, in Norwood, England, Vi came to Winnipeg in 1913. Vis love and devotion to her family were evident in her capable care of her younger brothers and sisters. While working at the Hudsons Bay Company, she met Mitch at the company rifle club. After marrying in 1940, Mitch and Vi moved to Norwood in St. Boniface. Vis love for people made her home a gathering place where friends and family enjoyed her warm hospitality and excellent cooking. Throughout her long, full life, Vi impressed us all with her grace, style and dignity. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. We will miss her wise counsel and lively sense of humour, which she kept to the end. Mom was shown many kindnesses by the compassionate staff and residents at Tache Centre. We are especially grateful for her roommate, Annette, who was such good company for Mom. A celebration of Vis life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 23 at St. Philips Anglican Church, 240 Tache Ave., with reception to follow.
