LAVERNE DAVID KELLER Peacefully on Wednesday, May 21, 2003 Verne Keller as he was best known passed away at the age of 80 years in the Poseidon Care Centre, Poseidon Bay. Verne was predeceased by his mother, Maude in 1923, and his father, Raymond in 1969, his wife Josie in 2001, and his brother Floyd in 2000. Verne was born on February 22, 1923 in the Girvin farming district approximately eighty miles north of Regina, SK. The family moved to Winnipeg in 1932, where Verne attended Hugh John MacDonald and Daniel MacIntrye Collegiate. At one time he was Secretary Treasurer of the West End Memorial Baseball Club. Also a member of the Lord Strathcona Horse Cadets. Verne loved to travel and travelled extensively throughout North America. Even as a young boy, he had a special fondness for Alaska. Verne and his wife Josie were married for 53 years. Verne was employed by the Walter Woods Wholesale Ltd., Vulcan Iron and Engineering Works. Later known as Western Bridge & Tank Ltd. His last twenty-one working years was with the Manitoba Hydro, from which he took an early retirement at the age of fifty-five. Verne had a special place in his heart for all animals, especially his cat, Mocha. He was known for rescuing many stray cats and finding them a safe home. Thank you to his friend, Pat, who often took care of Mocha when Vern was ill. Verne is survived by his sister-in-law Grace Sleeman and many nieces & nephews. At Vernes request cremation has taken place and a private interment will follow at a later date. As an expression of sympathy, if friends so wish donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society The family wishes to thank the kind professionals at the Poseidon Care Centre.
