BERNIE FUNK February 23, 1925 - May 30, 2003 Suddenly on May 30, 2003 Bernie passed away at Johnson Memorial Hospital (Gimli, MB) with his loving wife Nettie at his side. Bernie will be sadly missed by his wife of 56 years Nettie (Hiebert), daughter Debbie and son-in-law Robert De Jaeger and his two granddaughters, Melanie and Laura who all were great joys in his life. Bernie was predeceased by his parents, John and Margaret; brothers, Ed and John; and sister Teenie. Bernie is also survived by his sisters, Susie Morin, Edna (John) Klassen and numerous nieces and nephews. Bernie served his country by enlisting in the R.C.A.F. in 1943 with continued dedication until his discharge in 1949. From 1949 until December of 1952, Bernie worked for the street Railway until joining the Winnipeg Fire Department where he truly found his calling. Bernie was a member of the Winnipeg Fire Department for 37 years. During his years with the Department. he considered it a privilege to go to work everyday. He loved the work and the firefighters he served with. He was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #215, serving as President for two terms as well as being a Deputy Zone Commander. The family would like to thank Dr. R.C. Patel and all the nurses and support staff at Johnson Memorial Hospital as well as Dr. W. Czarnecki and his staff at the Manitoba Clinic for their support and dedication. As well we would like to thank our friends and neighbours Mr. and Mrs. Grapentine. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 5 at 1:00 p.m. at Klassen Funeral Chapel, 1897 Henderson Hwy. with The Rev. Canon J. Ronald McCallough and Captain Mark Young officiating. A reception will follow at Royal Canadian Legion Branch #215, DeVries Avenue. In lieu of flowers, friends may make donations in Bernies memory to the Fire Fighters Burn Fund, 202-666 St. James St., R3G 3J6 or the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 200-6 Donald St., R3L 0K6.
