HARRISON (HARRY) JAMES BEST February 16, 1917 - June 1, 2003 On June 1, 2003 at Grace Hospital, Harry peacefully slept away, with Lillian, his wife of 62 years, at his side. Born on Parkview Street, Harry lived his entire life in St. James. A life-long avid sports fan, especially hockey, he played on the first St. James Canadian Junior hockey team coached by Cliff OMeara. Later he signed with the Earls Court Rangers of London, England, but war was declared and he spent the next five and one half years in the R.C.A.F. Following the war, Harry was employed at the Manitoba Telephone System for 37 years. After retirement, he was able to once again follow his love of sports by working on a second career with R. Snell (Dunlop) Agency for ten successful years. Harry was a former member of St. James Masonic Lodge, a member of St. James Legion for 35 years, and Past-President and Life Member of Assiniboine Golf Club where he spent many hours and made many life-long friends. His love for the races took him to Assiniboine Downs until he was 82 years old. Harry and Lil loved to travel and enjoyed many winters in Mesa, AZ and Palm Springs, with quick trips to Los Angeles to visit Harrys cousins, the McQuade and McColl families, formerly of Winnipeg. Harry will be sadly missed by his wife Lillian; daughter Lynda and son-in-law Ed of Calgary; son Craig and daughter-in-law Patty of Winnipeg; grandchildren, Dean Schultz (Jen Biegler) of Calgary, Karen (Rob) Ryder of Edmonton, Tracy (Keith) Fortin of Edmonton, Lindsay and Scott Best of Winnipeg; great-grandchildren, Teena Ryder and Ethan Fortin; and special friends Roy and Thelma Fraser. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 6 at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Harrys name to the C.N.I.B., 1080 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3G 3M3. Arrangements entrusted to: CHAPEL LAWN FUNERAL HOME CEMETERY AND CREMATORIUM 885-9715
