BRIGADIER GENERAL HERBERT CATER MAXWELL C.D. On May 28, 2003 Herbert Maxwell passed away at the age of 95. Born and educated in Winnipeg, Herb is survived by his loving wife Nona; nieces, Pam Hill, Ipswich, England, Lynne Maxwell, London, England, Jane Maxwell, Point Roberts, Washington and Valerie Youngquist, Coldwater, Michigan; and his nephew Garth Jackson, Langley, BC. Herb worked for Canadian Fruit Distributors for many years, becoming manager in 1954. He left in 1956 to become manager of Apex Purchasing Service, a division of Westfair Foods Ltd. Herb was closely associated for many years with the Canadian Fruit Wholesalers Association and the Manitoba Vegetable Commission. In January 1968 he was made an Honorary Life Member of the Vegetable Growers Association of Manitoba. Herb was a Past President of the Winnipeg Rotary Club, Past Chairman Royal Commonwealth Society, Life Board Member of the Manitoba Lung Association, member Beaver Lodge AF & AM, Scottish Rite and Past President of the Ritualistic Unit of Khartoum Temple, former member of the Senior Bureau, Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce and Niakwa Country Club. Herbs military service consisted of five years military duty during the Second World War and 18 years in the Militia. He was commissioned in the 2nd Armoured Car Regiment and in Northwest Europe on the staff of H.Q. 21 Army Group. He was awarded the Kings Commendation and Canadian Forces Decoration. After the war he commanded the 2nd Armoured Car Regiment and the Winnipeg Grenadiers. In 1958 he was appointed Commander, 19 Militia Group retiring in 1962 with the rank of Brigadier. He was the Past President of the Royal Military Institute, member of the Fort Garry Horse Regimental Senate, Honorary Life Governor of the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires. Over the years, Herb and Nona were enthusiastic travelers, visiting many countries and after retirement spending many winters in Spain, Florida, Texas and Victoria.
