EDWARD KOWALCHUK

EDWARD KOWALCHUK On June 4, 2003, Ed passed away at Seven Oaks Hospital after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born on August 21, 1926 and grew up in Sandy Lake, MB. In 1944, he went to Normal School in Winnipeg. After a year in the military, he began teaching in Lyleton, MB in 1946. He was hired in West Kildonan where he taught at Victory School (1949), Belmont School (1954), and Edmund Partridge School (1955). He married Verna Krajeski in June 1955. He continued his teaching career at West Kildonan and Garden City collegiates. He completed his BA and BEd. at the University of Manitoba. During his 50 years in the education field, Ed was president of the Manitoba Teachers Society, a Director, Manitobas Representative, on the Canadian Teachers Federation, and Winnipeg Regional Director on the Provincial Executive of MAST. He was chairperson of the Winnipeg School Division No. 1 twice, representing Ward 3 for 12 years as Trustee. He was a current member of the Winnipeg School Division No. 1 Childrens Heritage Fund Committee. Ed volunteered his time with the Canadian Red Cross Society where he served a term as Treasurer. He also was a Director of the Friends of St. Josephs Board of Directors. During this time he also served as chairman of St. Josephs Annual Fund Raising Dinner Committee of St. Josephs Residence. He was a member of the Sons of Ukrainian Pioneers in Winnipeg. Ed was an avid historian and did research on the settlement of the Sandy Lake area and was currently working on a research project about the churches in the Riding Mountain area of Manitoba. His favourite pastime was golf, which he continued to play until recently. He was also an active ham radio operator and had many friends around the world. Ed is survived by his children, Stephen (Christine), and Marilyn (Ron) and granddaughter Anna of Victoria, BC. He is also survived by his brothers, Morris (Martha), and John, his sister Stella, his friend Dorothy, and numerous friends and relatives. He is predeceased by his wife Verna; his sister Leona; and his parents, Mike and Anna Kowalchuk. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 11 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Cantius, Roman Catholic Church, 846 Burrows Ave. with viewing one half hour prior to service. Rev. Msgr. Stan Jaworski will be officiating. Interment to follow at Holy Family Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined. If desired, donations may be made in Edwards memory to the Canadian Red Cross Society.
