HELEN KATCHANOSKI (LEPOWICK) (nee TABAKA) July 23, 1924 - June 7, 2003 Our dear mother and grandmother departed from our midst, while surrounded by her children and grandchildren at the Victoria General Hospital on Saturday, June 7, 2003. Helen was one of nine children born to Adam and Mary Tabaka (Koshowski) and raised on the family homestead in Pine River, MB. Helen finished her schooling in Dauphin before moving to Souris in the early 1940s to find work. In Souris, she met her soul mate, Philip Katchanoski. They married on January 26, 1946 and settled on their farm along the Souris River where they raised four children. Philip passed away in 1960. Helen then sold the farm and moved into Souris where she worked to provide for her children until they finished school and went out into the world. In 1970, Helen married Dan Lepowick and moved to Winnipeg. They shared 19 years together before his passing in 1989. Moms wealth went beyond material things. Her life revolved around her family. Mom spent countless hours baking, cooking, gardening, reading, and knitting. She generously shared all of these with her family. She was supportive and loving to the end. Her last words to each one of us were, "I love you and youll all be okay." We know that she is at peace and has gone to a better place. Helen is survived by her brother Steve Tobac and his wife Jean; her children and grandchildren: son Ray (Theresa), their children, Zoltan and Gabrielle; daughter Sharon (Dave Richardson), their children, Geoffrey (fiancee Sarah), Andrea and Gregory; daughter Sandra (Peter Kaufmann), and their children, Christopher and Mark; daughter Adrienne; numerous nieces and nephews, and her special pet cat, Luki. She was predeceased by her parents; two brothers, Jack and Mike and five sisters, Frances, Nellie, Ann, Margaret, and Emily. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., on Tuesday, June 10 at 7:00 p.m. with a reception to follow. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, June 11 at 4:00 p.m. at the Glenwood Cemetery in Souris, MB. Family and friends are welcome. The family would like to thank all those who helped out and were involved with Helen, especially the doctors, nurses and staff at the Victoria Hospital and Home Care. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association, Victoria Hospital Foundation, or the Humane Society would be greatly appreciated.
