GORDON ASHCROFT It is with our deepest sorrow we announce the passing of Gordon Melvin Thompson Ashcroft, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather. Gordon was 74 years of age. Peacefully, with his family at his bedside, with our hands and hearts in his, he breathed a sigh and gently he was gone. Dad was a good man. He was strong, compassionate, honourable, kind and loving. Encompassing all the noble qualities of a hard-working family man who provided and loved. And love he did. Dad said that life really began when he met his wife, our mother. Their relationship was a testament to love. An undying affection between companions that united them for over 54 years. Built on love that was steadfast and true. Dad had a passion for life, for community and friendships. He embraced everything wholeheartedly. He leaves to mourn his beloved wife Grace; daughter Arlea; son Derek (Stephanie) grandchildren, Brianne and Sean (Shirley) sister Donna (Jack) his many in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends. Like his father before him, Gordon worked for the railways, C.N.R. He worked hard as a carmen, painter for 35 years in Transcona shops until his retirement in 1985. He was an avid dog lover, having served many roles with the Canadian Kennel Club, such as Vice President, Judge, Director, Trainer over a period spanning 30 years. I remember spending many nights in the basement of the Pembina C.K.C. School, surrounded by dogs and watching him work his magic. Whether for show or as pets, he extended his love and care. Orbie misses him already. For years, Dad coached soccer, baseball, and hockey teams in Transcona. We were witness to our dads just view of life. For anyone who was on one of his teams, we learned that its how you play the game, not if you win or lose. As long as you tried your best, it was good enough. He made certain everyone was included, everyone had something to give, that everyone felt like a hero. Gordon loved travelling with his family by his side. He took them to many destinations across Canada, England and the United States. Upon retirement, Florida, Kissimmee became their winter home - and "Shoneys" his home away from home. Sandy Hook was his home from 1987. Grace and Gordon retired there. The early days as "cottagers" were spent clearing lots and building cottages. Later on, taking Arlea and Derek to the water was a daily event. As the kids grew, golf on the Sandy Hook course was a summer passion. Gordon also supported and was very active with the Anglican Church in Winnipeg Beach. Above all else, Gordon loved and cherished his family. He never left home without a kiss for Mom. He supported, encouraged and loved his children. He eagerly anticipated visits from his grandchildren. Nothing made him happier than seeing Brianne and Sean. We will always love you and miss you. Thanks for being DAD Memorial services will be held on Friday, June 13 at 12:30 p.m. at the Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., with Rev. Ken Pawluk officiating.
