MAUREEN (PATRICIA) DOIG (nee MCCALLUM) Maureen has completed her journey through this life... a journey of commitment, achievement and significant contribution to her community and society. Maureen, daughter of Sam and Ada McCallum, sister to Bill and Linda (Stewart), was born and educated in Winnipeg, MB. She graduated as an R.N. from the Winnipeg General Hospital School of Nursing, then worked as a Head Nurse in Intensive Care at Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre. Maureen and George moved their family to Thunder Bay in 1972 where she began her new career as a volunteer, starting with involvement in the public school system as she supported and encouraged her children. Whether cooking hot dogs, driving or just "being there", the "GrammaMobile" was always in motion. Maureen then joined the Childrens Aid Society as a member of the Board of Directors where she served in many capacities. She was elected as Chair of the Board and was Founding Director of the Thunder Bay Childrens Services Foundation. She later moved on to assume the responsibility of Chair of the Childrens Aid Society of Ontario. When family commitments required that she stay closer to home, she accepted a Board position at Lakehead University, where in her usual manner of rising to the top, she became the first woman to preside as Chair of the Board of Governors. Her tenure as chair was a period of great challenge and also of tremendous personal satisfaction. Maureen had a strong faith and was actively involved in the Anglican Church serving as Rectors Warden at St. Michaels and more recently attending St. Thomas Church. She was always willing to help in fundraising and parish activities. The last two years have presented a variety of new challenges to Maureen. She faced each hurdle with dignity and courage. Her unfailing strength in the face of death has set an example for us all. A memorial service will be held at St. Thomas Church, Thunder Bay, on Monday, June 16 at 2:00 p.m. Should friends desire, donations to Lakehead University, reference the Maureen Doig Memorial Award, c/o Development Office, Lakehead University, 955 Oliver Rd., Thunder Bay, ON P7B 5E1 would be appreciated. Maureens family and friends in Canada, the United States and Northern Ireland rejoice in her living, respect her life, and accept with sadness, her leaving to start the next phase of her journey. Safe Home!
