SIGURLIN HOLMFRIDUR ROED (nee DANIELSON) Suddenly on June 16, 2003 at Misericordia Health Centre. Sigurlin was born in Gimli on November 16, 1920 to Helgi and Gudrun Danielson. She was predeceased by her husband Sverre (Sam) her son Lyle, and her sister Jonina Eaman. She is survived by her daughter Ingrid (Marc), son Chris (Donna), son Mark, and daughter Deborah. She also leaves to mourn her grandchildren, Jennifer Urmson (Chris), Heather, Jon, and Leanne; her brother Marvin Danielson and sister Lilja Melsted, as well as many nieces and nephews. Sigurlin led a full and active life. Her family was her first priority, but she also found time for many cultural, church and community activities. Her love of learning led her to become a teacher, beginning in one room rural schools. After her marriage, she left teaching to devote her time to raising their five children, but once her children were all in school, she returned to teaching, finishing her career as a tutor for sick children at St. Boniface Hospital. During this time she was also active in the Home and School Association and Friends of the Library group. She was a member of First Lutheran Church, taught Sunday School there for many years, and served on the Christian Education Committee. In spite of the demands of work and family, she and Sam always found time for themselves as well. They shared a love of dancing, and the sight of them together on the dance floor remains a treasured memory for their family and friends. Sigurlin was devoted to keeping the Icelandic heritage alive in Manitoba. She led Icelandic classes for many years, served on the boards of the Icelandic Canadian Fron, the Icelandic National League, and the Logberg-Heimskringla newspaper and was a founding member of the H.I.P. Committee which raised the funds to endow the Icelandic Chair at the University of Manitoba. In 1987, she was honoured to be chosen as the Fjallkona for the Icelandic Festival at Gimli. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, June 19 at First Lutheran Church, 580 Victor St. Interment at Gimli Cemetery at about 2:30 p.m. Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to First Lutheran Church. Sigurlin was a warm, gentle and loving person who will be sorely missed by all who knew her. NEIL BARDAL INC. 949-2200

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • So sorry to hear of your Mom, Sigurlin. Such a long time ago now - my lovely Lyle died in 1998 and his Mom and Dad, 4 - 5 years later. A lovely family and it was a pleasure to meet everyone. I am still in the Okanagan Valley in BC. - Posted by: Carole Fawcett (Friend of son Lyle) on: Jul 26, 2023
