LILLIAN (LILY) MATTHES (nee WEDAY) It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, who was a wonderful baba, sister, aunt, and a friend to all. She passed away after an unexpectedly short illness on June 17, 2003, at Riverview Health Centre, at the age of 64. Lillian was predeceased by her loving husband of 30 years, Bill, in 1988. She was also predeceased by her parents, Stephen and Nettie, as well as her older sister Nettie Johnson. She will be lovingly remembered by her devoted children, daughter Lillian and Brian Brooker, and son Bill. Also mourning her loss are grandchildren, Melanie and Samantha. Mom leaves behind her sisters, Sophie and John Motuz, Marge and Les Quesnel, Mary Colpitts, and brother Rudy and Pauline Weday, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She will also be lovingly remembered by her friend Doreen Privee, whom she spent much time with in sickness and in health. Mom was born in Sandy Lake, MB, and grew up in Rackham. She later moved to Winnipeg and met her sweetheart William. Mom was a hard working lady for all of her life. She enjoyed her employment with Globe General Agencies for over 35 years until she had to retire early due to illness. She shared many good as well as hard times with her husband, Bill, until his all too early death at the age of 54. Mom especially enjoyed decorating her home with Christmas decorations and had her family share a close Christmas dinner each year. She also loved to play bingo and rarely missed her nightly trip to the bingo hall to be with all her friends. We will especially miss those marathon cooking days that produced so many of our favourite Ukrainian dishes. We would like to thank all of the health care providers who helped to make moms days during treatment for her lung cancer, as well as her last days, more bearable. Thanks go to Cancer Care Manitoba physicians, Dr. Navaratnam and Dr. Leylek who was especially helpful in moms final days of treatment. A special thanks are extended to all the staff of the Palliative Care Ward at Riverview Health Centre for the special care given to mom during her last and all too short days. Thanks are also extended to Dr. Gorski who cared for mom before and during her illness. Mom had a kind and generous heart and always gave what she could to others in greater need. We will remember you always in our hearts. Love you Ma. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, June 22, at 2:00 p.m., at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Cremation has taken place and internment will occur at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lillians memory to Cancer Care Manitoba or Riverview Health Centre. What Cancer Cannot Do Cancer is so limited It cannot cripple love It cannot shatter hope It cannot erode faith It cannot destroy peace It cannot kill friendship It cannot suppress memories It cannot silence courage It cannot invade the soul It cannot steal eternal life It cannot conquer the spirit.
