SEVERINE SOKULSKI (nee PODIUK) June 17, 1921 - June 24, 2003 Peacefully at Jocelyn House in Winnipeg, Severine passed away at age 82. She will be lovingly remembered and much missed by her family and friends. Severine was predeceased by her husband Peter; son Michael; parents, Antonina and Dmytro Podiuk and sister Doris Halibut. She is survived by her daughters, Pat (Garry Hebert), Marilyn (Mahadeo Daulat), Donna, Irene (John Kalomiris) and daughter-in-law Marika; her grandchildren, Eric (Leslie), Roger and Sheila (David) Strong, Michael Sokulski, Sean (Sylvia), Larissa (Kent) and Tim Daulat, Jean-Paul (Christine) Kowal and Helena and Theo Kalomiris; great-grandchildren, Zachary and Matyas Daulat and Remie Strong-Ostrosser; sister Irene Emms, numerous nieces and nephews and many relatives in Ukraine. Severine will also be lovingly remembered by her foster children with whom she formed rewarding and lasting relationships, Ken (Ruth) and Eric (Ariel) Cook, Shirley (Richard) Evans, Verna and Wayne Babiak, Brenda Murdock, Norma (Alden) Wood, Wayne Parisian and Debra (Herbert) Robinson. Severine was born in 1921 in Yazlovets, povit Buchach, oblast Ternopil, Ukraine. She immigrated to Canada with her mother and sister Doris in 1934. Her father had preceded them to Canada in 1928. They homesteaded near Poplarfield, MB where sister Irene was born. In 1938 she married Peter Sokulski joining him on his family farm in Poplarfield. After many years of active community life in Poplarfield, due to failing health, they moved to Winnipeg in 1986. Severine lived her life to the fullest - never a moment or step wasted. She had a passion for family, church, sewing and quilting, gardening, cooking, singing, socializing, bargain shopping and new experiences. She was very proud of her Ukrainian heritage and through her stories, songs and traditions, passed wisdom and lore to others. She also had a great respect for and interest in other cultures. Her children, grandchildren and foster children will remember her for her steadfast caring, constant encouragement, generosity of heart, strong work ethic and her quick wit and humour. Her strength, courage and determination to overcome any adversity cut an example for us all. Special thanks to Dr. Brian Sharkey, Fr. Gnutel, co-residents at St. Johns Haven, home care staff, pastoral team at Holy Family and the staff and volunteers at Jocelyn House for their support, care and many kindnesses. Prayers will be said at Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church, 1001 Grant Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3M 1Y3 on Thursday, June 26 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church on Friday, June 27 at 10:00 a.m. with Fr. Mark Gnutel officiating. Pallbearers will be Ken Cook, Roger Strong, Sean Daulat, Jean-Paul Kowal, Theo Kalomiris and Tim Daulat. Interment to follow at Holy Family Cemetery, 4355 Main St. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church or to Jocelyn House, 177 Egerton Rd., Winnipeg, MB R2M 2W7.
