LYDIA JANE YOUNG (nee BOWERS) The family of Lydia Jane Young announces with great sorrow her passing to the spirit world on Wednesday, June 25, 2003 at the age of 65 years. We will remember the courage and desire to live that Lydia showed during her five year battle with cancer. Leaving to cherish her memory are her husband Herman of 37 years of marriage; children, Bill Jr., Faron, Darryl, Winona, Howard and Helen, along with daughters-in-law, Tracy, Barb, Michelle and Lucy. She was blessed with 13 grandchildren, Billy-Joe, Jennifer, Alisha, Krista, Michael, Priscilla, Nicole, Jesse, Jacqueline, Jordan, Lacey, Kevin and Colin. Lydia had two great-grandchildren, Jamie and Teneia. She is survived by her brother Barney; beloved sisters, Mary and Susan; brother Stanley and his wife Rita; and sisters-in-law, Bernice, Brenda and Hazel. Lydia will also be remembered by her nieces, Myra, Sharon, Noreen, Janice, and Lorrie with whom she shared a close loving relationship. She will also be sadly missed by cousins, George Burston and Starr. Lydia will be sadly missed by her many friends and the staff at the Friendship Centre and Club 60. She was predeceased by her mother and father, brothers, Joe and Elijah, sister Helen, brother-in-law Ernie and first husband Bill Young Sr. Lydia was born March 26, 1938 and raised on Fisher River Cree Nation. She was the daughter of Elijah Sr. and Priscilla Bowers who gave her seven loving siblings. In 1952 Lydia moved to Winnipeg, MB. During her years in Winnipeg she strived to improve the lives of citizens of Winnipeg. Lydia worked with the Native Clan Organization, Stoney Mountain Correctional Institute, Headingley Correctional Institute, and Native Addictions of Manitoba. Her volunteer work included the Winnipeg Friendship Centre, Winnipeg Harvest, and the Elizabeth Frye Society of Manitoba. Moms favourite pass-time was to play bingo and chat with her many friends at the Friendship Center and Army-Navy Club 60. Prayers will take place on Saturday, June 28 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Indian and Metis Friendship Centre, 45 Robinson St., Winnipeg. Lydias funeral service will be held on Sunday, June 29 at 2:00 p.m. in the United Church in Fisher River Cree Nation, Manitoba with Pastor John Halcrowe officiating. Our family would like to express our gratitude for the excellent care given by Dr. Mihalcioiu and the nurses from the CancerCare Manitoba and the WHRA Palliative Care program staff.
