SAM STERN 1915 - 2003 It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the passing of Sam Stern on Wednesday, July 2, 2003. Predeceased by his wife Esther (Leve), and his brother Dave, he is survived by his daughter Andrea Stern, son-in-law Isaac Singer, daughter Karen Stern, son-in-law John Michaels, son Michael, sister Eva Sussman and grandsons Evan, Benjamin, and Jonathan Singer, Jamie, Yale and Alex Michaels. Sam was born October 15, 1915. He emigrated from Russia with his family in the 1920s. Growing up in Winnipeg he attended Aberdeen, Strathcona and St. Johns schools. He was a star athlete in soccer, football, baseball and basketball, playing on many championship teams. After graduating high school he joined his father on his farm near Simpson, SK. He married Esther in 1948 and moved to Moose Jaw where his three children were born. He worked as a cattle buyer and operated a feed lot. He moved back to Winnipeg in 1961 where he continued his occupation until retiring at age 80. Sam loved life and lived it to the fullest. He was a kind, gentle, generous loving man. He always had a twinkle in his eye, a smile on his face and a joke on his lips. His greatest joy was spending time with his six grandsons, who delighted in being with him. Sam is very much missed. Funeral services were held at Shaarey Zedek Synagogue on July 3. Pallbearers were Michael Stern, Evan Singer, Benjamin Singer, Jamie Michaels, Neil Stern, and Allen Botan. Shiva is at 304 Boreham Blvd. until July 9th. Donations can be made to the Alzheimer Association, 10-120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2.
