RUTH IRENE ROBERTSON (nee BARTLETT) May 10, 1920 to July 3, 2003 In the early morning hours of July 3, 2003, Ruth went peacefully to her eternal rest. She died of complications from lung disease resulting from breast cancer treatments received more than 45 years ago. Life is a precious gift, one not to be taken for granted. Ruth knew this in her heart and she fought and defended that gift with a tenacity and with a dignity that is a true inspiration to all who knew her. Ruth will be remembered for her warmth, generosity, insatiable curiosity and her passion for life. These are some of the gifts that she has passed to her children, grandchildren, and everyone whose life she has touched. Born in Winnipeg, Ruth lived her life in Manitoba. She graduated from Gordon Bell High School, and the University of Manitoba (B.Sc., Botany and Zoology) in 1938. She was a gifted student and, at the tender age of 18, applied to the University of Manitoba Medical School. In those days, it was rare for an 18 year old woman to study medicine so she completed her training as a registered nurse at the Winnipeg General Hospital in 1943. She began her nursing career as a public health nurse, serving rural communities in western Manitoba and later for the City of Winnipeg. She retired in 1985. In her early nursing years she did everything from pulling teeth, to delivering babies, providing care always with warmth, compassion and wit. As a public health nurse in Winnipeg, she worked in the inner city, building strong and caring relationships with families, and finding ways of stimulating and supporting children. Ruth was a long-time member of the University Womens Club, the Manitoba Naturalists Society, Toastmistresses, Westminster United Church and the UCW, and Agape Table. Her lifelong romance with Allan Robertson began with a gallant rescue from an overturned cutter in a prairie snowdrift. They married in 1944, and farmed and raised a family of six children at McAuley. In 1967, the family moved to Winnipeg and have lived here since. She was a devoted mother and wife, presiding over her busy household with a radiant smile and a gentle touch. The house was usually overflowing with children, and there was always an extra plate at the ready at Ruth Robertsons table. Ruth will be lovingly remembered by Allan Robertson her best friend, lover and husband of 58 years, and by a large and loving family including her brother Al Bartlett CD; brother-in-law the Rev. O.T. Hughes; six children and their spouses - Dorothy Crellin and John Zyzneiwski, Mary Jean and Bill Routledge, Br. John George Robertson, Craig Robertson and Berta Zaccardi, Lois and Clayton Gray, Pat Robertson and Roddy Briggs; 13 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, three nieces and one nephew. She was predeceased by her father George Wesley Bartlett, mother Dorothy Woolgrove Bartlett (nee Herbert), and sister Mary Fern Bartlett Hughes. A celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, July 6 at 3:00 p.m. at Meadowood Manor Personal Care Home, 575 St. Annes Rd. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Meadowood Manor or CancerCare Manitoba.
