J. HAROLD HACKETT, CD February 5, 1920 - July 6, 2003 Peacefully, in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 6, 2003, Harold Hackett, dearly loved husband of 62 years of Mary, passed away at the Health Sciences Centre. He was cherished father and father-in-law to son Leroy and Marie Hackett and to daughter Margaret (Marnie) and Bob Hughes. Remembering him with love, joy and gratitude also are his grandson Noel Hughes, granddaughter Tawnya Stringer, her husband Christopher and their children, Caleb, Mason and Ryleigh and granddaughter Heather Hackett and her husband Stephen Ker. He is remembered by his sister Verna Kelly and many other relatives in Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta and friends and neighbours in Winnipeg as a man of kindness and cheery optimism. Dad was born in Bruce County, ON. At age 20 he joined the Army and served overseas with the Elgin Regiment during the Second World War, going on to retire from RCEME in Montreal in 1970 after having been posted to Alert and various bases in Ontario, Germany and Quebec. A hard-working man, he then worked for many years at 202 workshop in Montreal. He continued his working career in Ottawa where he was a Commissionaire at Transport Canada retiring "again" at age 76 and moving here to be close to family in Winnipeg and Shilo. Mary and Harold formed friendships that would last a lifetime in every place they moved and nurtured close and distant family ties. Harold was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who enjoyed lifes simple pleasures. He will be remembered by many for his quick smile, the twinkle in his eye, his cheery wave and above all for his willingness to lend a hand. Thank you Harold, Dad, Grandpa (Grampy) and Great-Grampy for all the ways you have enriched our lives. Those we love dont pass away, they walk beside us everyday; unseen, unheard but always near, still loved, always missed and dear. The family wishes to thank Dr. P. Czaykowski and Christy at CancerCare, Health Sciences Centre staff on GD4 and GD5, Eva and Shelley of We Care for their compassion and care. We are also grateful to Rev. Clark Saunders, fellow Westworth United Church members and neighbours for their very kind support and comfort. Special thanks to Ellen R. for her comforting presence. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 9 at 3:30 p.m. in Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway. Donation to CancerCare Manitoba, 193 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 9S9 or Hospice & Palliative Care Manitoba, 2109 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3J 0L3 would be greatly appreciated.
