JOHN SHEWCHUK Peacefully, with his family at his side, John Shewchuk, aged 88, passed into the arms of Our Lord on Sunday, July 6, 2003 at Seven Oaks General Hospital. Johns memory will be cherished forever by his loving wife of 61 years, Jean; his daughter Gloria and his son Reg; his sisters, Sophie Diswinka, Sandi Burrows, Barbara Stairs; and his brother Mike. He is survived also by numerous nieces and nephews. John was a special uncle to Jeans niece, Elsie McGill, and Elsies daughter Tannis Appelmans and husband Rob. John was predeceased by his parents, Anna and Harry; his sister Mary Davies; and his brothers, Harry, Nick and Nestor. John was born in Newdale, MB in 1915. He and his family moved to Port Arthur in 1936. In 1942, he married the love of his life, Jean Chabot. During the Second World War, John served in the Royal Canadian Army Pioneer Corps. In 1960, John and Jean, along with their two children, moved to Winnipeg. John on arrival became an active member of St. Josephs Ukrainian Catholic Church. He served as the first president of St. Josephs Mens Club and worked at the church bingo for many, many years. He was a lifetime member of St. Josephat Council 4138, Knights of Columbus. He served as faithful navigator and commander in the fourth degree Canon Luhovy Assembly. John was also a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion and worked on the 573 Air Cadets Sponsoring Committee. The family would like to thank the City of Winnipeg First Responders, the medical and nursing staff of the ICU at Seven Oaks, and especially Marie for her compassionate care for John and for family members. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in Johns memory may be made to St. Josephs Ukrainian Catholic Church, Building and Capital Maintenance Fund. Prayers will be said on Wednesday, July 9 at 7:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Thursday, July 10 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Josephs Ukrainian Catholic Church, 250 Jefferson Ave., with Fr.
