LILLIAN WEINER Lillian Weiner passed away July 8, 2003 at the age of 102 years. Born in Russia in 1901, Lil was the second child of Nathan and Ada Freedman. At age nine, Lil immigrated with her family to Canada, settling in Winnipeg, where the family grew from five to nine. Lils formal schooling was followed by business college, and her first job was as a stenographer at the Ford Motor Company. She next worked as a bookkeeper for Canadian National Railways. On a vacation in St.NPaul she met Edward Weiner and they were married the next year. After staying in St. Paul for five years, they moved to Winnipeg, and then in 1936 ventured west, settling in Drumheller, AB. There, they opened a mens and ladies clothing store, and Lil was active in the I.O.D.E., Order of the Eastern Star (Ruth Chapter), Order of the Royal Purple, and various business organizations. In 1978, they sold the store and moved to Calgary to be closer to their daughter and grandchildren. Lil continued to be active and was a member of the Beth Tzedec Congregation, Hadassah Wizo, National Council of Jewish Women, Calgary Womens O.R.T., and the I.O.D.E. After 59 years of marriage, Ed died in 1983. Lil remained in her own condo and continued her club work and cashiered at the I.O.D.E thrift store until 1997 when she suffered a fall. Unable to continue on her own, she moved into Jackson Place where she quickly made new friends, and received exemplary care from a very understanding and caring staff. Lil was predeceased by her parents; her brothers, Charlie of Blairmore, Harry of Ponoka, Max of Washington and Winnipeg, Fred of St. Paul, and Sam of Winnipeg; her sister Caroline Berbrayer of Winnipeg; and son-in-law Bernard Laven of Calgary. She leaves to mourn her daughter Sharna Laven; grandchildren, Lori (David) Gray, Shel (Svetlana) Laven, Blair (Tamar) Laven, Craig (Zoe) Laven; and great-grandchildren, Jaclyn, Megan, Sonia, Yakov, and Zev; as well as her sister-in-law Brownie Freedman, sister-in-law Marion Elfenbein; brother-in-law Irv Wyner; and nieces, nephews and cousins. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donors choice. Services will be held at the Jewish Memorial Chapel at 1702 - 17th Avenue SW, Calgary, today at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at the Jewish Cemetery, 30 Avenue and Erlton Street SW.
