BERTHA SUMMERFELD Bertha passed away peacefully on July 10, 2003 at the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre. Bertha was born November 18, 1908 in Janzen, SK. She took most of her elementary schooling in Saskatoon, SK, attending Buena Vista School for some years. She attended Nutana Collegiate and took her secretarial course at Bedford Road Collegiate. She loved athletics, taking part in basketball, tennis, track and bowling. Bertha began her lifelong career at Canada Life Mortgage Department at their Saskatoon offices in 1928. She later moved to their Regina office and, in 1949, she moved to their offices in Winnipeg. She retired from the company in Winnipeg in 1967, after completing 39 years of service. During her years in Winnipeg, she was an active member of the Winnipeg Business and Professional Womens Club. She was a member of the executive and a number of committees, while enjoying the social life of the Clubhouse. Bertha loved her church, The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, Academy Road. She was Receiving Treasurer for some years and was an active member of the Lutheran Womens Missionary League for many years. Bertha was predeceased by her parents, Rosalia and Gustav Summerfeld; her sister Tillie Ayers; and her three brothers, Julius, Jack, and Albert. She is survived by one sister-in-law Jessie Summerfeld of Meadow Lake, SK and numerous nieces and nephews and their families throughout Canada and the United States including her longtime caregiver nephew Bert Ayers and his wife Betty Anne of Saskatoon. Bertha wished to express her appreciation to the staff and volunteers at Rimmer House, Lions Manor for their loving care during her last years. Bertha, for many years, was thankful for the support of her dear friends in Winnipeg, Emma Eckert, Rita and Alfred Walters, Gertrude Bishoff, and Frances and Russell Eaton. Funeral service will be held on Monday, July 14 at 2:00 p.m. at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 59 Academy Rd., Winnipeg, Pastor James Scholz officiating. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, July 17, at Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon. THOMSON Funeral Chapels - 669 Broadway - 783-7211
