KIVA BERGER It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Zaida, and friend Kiva Berger on July 18, 2003 after a brief illness with cancer. He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his children, Barry and Margo Berger, Susan and Ori Wieselman, Sarah and Jack Offman; his adoring grandchildren, Michelle Berger and Adrien Daigle, Sara Katz, Myles Wieselman (and partner Ondine), Jeffrey Wieselman (and girlfriend Indira), Elliot and Helen Offman, Steven Offman (and partner Lindsay), Raymond Offman; great-grandson Hayden Offman; his very dear and special friend Gertie Stargardter and her family. He is also survived by his sisters, Dora Waintman, Leah Pinchuk and Eva Chodus; his brother and sister-in-law Usher and Sylvia Berger; his sister-in-law Sophie Berger; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Kiva was predeceased by his wife Gertrude and his brother Jake. Kiva was born in Saskatchewan and grew up on the family farm. He became a teacher and began his career teaching in Saskatchewan. He later moved his family to Winnipeg where he worked for the Winnipeg School Division as a teacher and administrator for many years. He ended his career at Churchill High School where he was Vice Principal. Kiva was an active member of the Winnipeg Teachers Association. He served on many W.T.A. Committees that addressed teacher welfare and professional development issues. He was a recipient of the W.T.A. Distinguished Service Award. Kiva was a member of the Beth Israel Synagogue and served as a board member and President. He was also a member of Congregation Etz Chayim. Kiva also served on the board of The Middle Church Home of Winnipeg. Kiva was very active and enjoyed weekly activities at the Wellness Institute until his illness surfaced a short time ago. Kiva was a gentle and insightful man, who always took the time to listen, and always kept his word. He was loved and respected by all, especially his grandchildren who were very devoted to him. A graveside funeral service was held on Sunday, June 20 with Rabbi N. Rose and Cantor A. Berkal officiating. The family would like to thank the staff at Seven Oaks General Hospital, Dr. David Reimer, Trevor Wagner and Irene Neufeld for their excellent care and compassion. In keeping with Kivas wishes there will be no Shiva. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Kivas memory to the Canadian Cancer Society, The Middle Church Home of Winnipeg, Congregation Etz Chayim or a charity of your choice.
