NETTIE SHUMILAK Peacefully at home, in her daughters arms and in the presence of her family, Mom passed away on July 18, 2003 after a courageous battle with cancer. Mom was the last surviving member of her family and was predeceased by her husband Paul Sr., her parents, Mike and Mary Kogut; her brothers and sisters, Millie Wazney, Kay Hiebert, Mike Kogut, Joe Kogut and Mary Kogut. Her memory will live on through her children, Robert (Sharon) Shumilak, Paul (Susan) Shumliak, Jim (friend Prescilla) Shumilak, Diane (Les) Wittmeier, Doreen Shumilak and her 13 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter and many nieces and nephews. Mom was born on May 15, 1919 in the Sapton area just south of Garson, MB where she spent her formative years. At the early age of 14 she went to Winnipeg and was employed as a housekeeper and child care giver. She met Paul Shumilak and they were married on June 26, 1943 in Garson. Mom and Dad had their first home in Siebright and later they moved to a farm north of Garson purchased from Dads uncle in 1945 where she resided until her passing. Together Mom and Dad lovingly raised their five children while operating their grain and cattle farm. Mom was a source of strength and comfort to her family. She taught by example, by the way she led her life through her generous and caring ways. We know Dads passing in 1984 left a void in her life, but a year later after being a grandmother for many years, she once again took on the role of mother. She used the next seven years to impart the same qualities in three of her grandchildren that she had done with her own children years earlier. Mom enjoyed life and it was obvious to everyone who met her. She was particularly fond of the many visits she shared with her family and friends as well the bus trips and card games with other members of the Golden Age Seniors Club. The outdoors provided Mom a lot of pleasure and the upkeep of her yard and garden was something that she took seriously until just a few days before her passing. Prayers will be said on Monday (tonight) at 7:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 22 at 10:30 a.m. in the Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church, Garson with Fr. S. Gacki officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. Her pallbearers will be grandsons, Kevin, Jason and Chris Shumilak, Adam and Evan Wittmeier and Robbie Smith. In lieu of flowers, donations in Moms honour may be made to Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church in Garson or charity of ones own choice. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
