NICK YACENTIUK 1923 - 2003 After a long and courageous battle of illness Nick, in his 79th year, passed away on July 17, 2003 at the Concordia Hospital. Nick was the beloved husband of the late Stella Mckenzie Yacentiuk who passed away in 1990. Nick was predeceased by his father Stefan Yacentiuk in 1961, his mother Elena Yacentiuk in 1985, brother John in 1998, all of Minitonas, MB, and brother-in-law Peter Hrycenko of Welland, ON in 1992. Nick is survived by his sister Mary Hrycenko of Welland. Nick was born in Sifton, MB and at the age of five years the family moved to Minitonas. Nick attended West Favel school until he was transferred to the New Norths Creek school to acquire his education. In 1941 Nicks brother John was drafted into the Canadian Forces. Nick then helped his father on the farm until John was discharged from overseas service. Nick decided to seek work outside Minitonas, so he took a first aid course and got a job as a Swan Valley ambulance driver. After a few years Nick left for another job as a security guard officer in a hydro project in northern Manitoba. When that work was finished Nick went to Winnipeg where he worked as a security guard officer and met his loving wife Stella. Nick remained as a security guard officer until having to resign due to illness. Upon retirement Nick thoroughly enjoyed gardening, going for walks, and spending time with friends and neighbours. One of Nicks favourite pastimes was reading, and he would spend many hours at the Winnipeg Public Library. A memorial service will be conducted by Fr. Michael Krochak at the Transcona Funeral Chapel at 1800 Day St., Winnipeg, MB on July 23, at 2:30 p.m. Cremation has taken place. Internment to take place at a later date. Nicks family would like to sincerely thank the doctors and nurses at the Concordia Hospital for the excellent care they provided him in his final days. Flowers are gratefully declined. If family and friends desire, donations in Nicks honour may be made to the Salvation Army.
