HAZEL LOUISE PAYSON (nee MORDEN) Hazel Louise Payson of Sandy Hook, MB, passed away peacefully at the Gimli Community Health Centre on Tuesday, July 22, 2003 at the age of 79 years. Hazel bravely fought cancer for the third time. She was born in Chaplin, SK on October 2, 1923. Hazel married George Payson in 1940 in Moose Jaw, SK. Their first son, George Gary was born in Moosejaw in 1941 and their second son, Rodney Elwood was born in Moosejaw in 1946. Hazel lived on her own in Winnipeg from 1964 until 1980. Her partner of the last 22 years, John Trosky passed away last fall. Hazel pursued a career as a medical assistant and was especially fond of her long term employment with Dr. Mitchell, who now resides in England. Her passion over the last number of years was golf. She loved the game and enjoyed playing in Sandy Hook, where she and John lived for the last 15 years. Her sense of humour and caring of others drew people to her. She was grateful for her many friends and regardless of their age, her "motherly instinct" was always present. Hazel was one strong willed lady who knew what she wanted from life and did her best to get it. This was one of the many positive values she instilled in her sons. Hazels only remaining sibling, Roy Morden of Palm Springs, California was able to visit her in the hospital. This brought her great joy. She adored her granddaughters, all five of them, Michelle Lynne Duimel and Lori Anne Huebner (daughters of George and Carole) and Jennifer Elizabeth, Julia Louise and Leone Michelle (daughters of Rodney and Janice). Hazel also had three great-grandchildren, Benjamin Payson Huebner, Jadeyn Beth Duimel and Carlyn Alexandria Duimel. A celebration of Hazels life will be held on Saturday, July 26 at 12:00 noon at the New Horizons Senior Citizens Centre in Gimli. A private family interment will be held at a late date. The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to the nursing staff and Dr. R.C. Patel at the Gimli Community Health Centre. As well, a thank you to the EMTs who travelled with Hazel over many times in the past few months. In lieu of flowers friends may make a donation to CancerCare Manitoba, Rm. 1160-675 McDermot Ave, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9 or to the charity of ones choice. Gilbart Funeral Home, Gimli, in care of arrangements.
