Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryRODERICK HENRY McASKILL Passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 22, 2003 at the Gladstone Hospital at the age of 91 years. Rod was born June 2, 1912 at Gladstone and was the third child of Roderick and Alice McAskill. He received his education in Gladstone and remained in the area his entire life. Rod was predeceased by his beloved wife Vera (1983) his daughter Lois (1981) son-in-law Ken (2003) brother Bob (1991) and sisters, Rhoda (1988), and Hazel (1997). Left to mourn his passing are sons, Rod and Alan (Sharon) daughters, Cheryl (Ian) Revie, Heather (Bob) Burchett, Roberta Ferguson, Val (Lionel) Ballendine, Verna (Bob) McClintock, Betty (Gordon) Cogar; 22 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. From a young age Rod showed a genuine interest in learning and loved to read and experiment. He excelled in Mathematics and easily understood the workings of a motor. He was employed as a mechanic and machinist most of his life. He spent many hours in his "shop" repairing parts or developing new parts on his lathe, especially for farmers. He built power hacksaws until the age of 80. Rod enjoyed curling and golfing and was a life member of the Gladstone Curling Club. He spent many hours working in his garden on his farm. He enjoyed sharing his bounty with many friends and neighbours. While he was able, he made several trips a day to "the farm" to ensure that the wildlife was safe and healthy; feeding deer, squirrels, and always planting extra corn for the "coons". Rod always had a dog and later when he could no longer care for a dog his companions became his cats. The family wishes to express sincere thank you to all Dads neighbours who watched over him for many years and the Home Care staff. We appreciate the kindness and care given to Dad by the doctors and nurses and all the staff at Third Crossing Manor and the Gladstone Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 26 at the Gladstone United Church with Rev. Bob Hunter officiating. Interment will follow at Gladstone Cemetery. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Northwest Handi Transit Inc., Box 757, Gladstone, MB R0J 0T0 or the Humane Society, Box 151, 162-2025 Corydon Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3P 0N5.
