ROLF PAUL SCHUMANN May 15 1937 - July 23, 2003 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Rolf Paul Schumann on July 23, 2003 in the presence of his family, after a determined battle with cancer. As with other challenges in his life, he faced this with courage, strong will, and humour. Rolf will be dearly missed and remembered by his wife of 42 years, Irmgard (nee Hillius) his children, Ingrid (Martin) Bell of Kitchener, ON, Darcy (Karen) Schumann of Calgary, AB, Norman (Caroline) Schumann of Nagoya, Japan, Derek (Socorro) Schumann of Vancouver, BC, Michelle (Matthew) Schumann of Austin, TX, and Jason (Jemma) Schumann of Vancouver. He will always be remembered as a wonderful Opa by his grandchildren, Jacqueline and Evan Bell, Lauren and Jillian Shumann, and expected Karl Schumann. Rolf will also be remembered by family in Germany and Winnipeg, MB as well as the family dog, Axel. Immigrating to Canada from Germany in 1957, Rolf chose Winnipeg as his home. He came to love Canada as a beautiful country and was proud to be a Canadian. He met and married Irmgard in 1960. To expand upon his business education from Germany, he obtained his Grade 12 diploma and studied accounting at the University of Manitoba. His strong work ethic allowed him to pursue many ventures over the years. His dream of owning his own business was achieved in 1983 when he formed Tar Sands Metal Ltd. It continues to be a well-respected company based on hard work, honesty, and a job well done. After several years in Fort McMurray, AB and Cleveland, OH, Rolf and Irmgard settled in Calgary. Rolfs commitment to his family was an example of solid strength, as he was an excellent provider and role model. He always took tine for a game of soccer, street hockey or swimming in the family pool. His quick sense of humour and helpful nature will be fondly remembered by all who met him. Although Rolf worked hard, he took time to enjoy activities such as camping, hiking, dancing, playing chess, playing organized soccer, and reading his favourite treasuries of "Herman". He was a man who enjoyed life to the fullest. Special thanks goes to the compassionate care provided by Dr. Tara Pickering and nurses, Carol Boyer, Pat Schuster, Thuy Nguyer, Judy Kuehn, and the many others who helped Rolf achieve his wish to remain at home. A memorial service in celebration of Rolf Schumanns life will be held at the Calgary Crematorium Chapel, 3219 - 4 Street N.W. (within the valley of Queens Park Cemetery), on Sunday, July 27 at 2:00 p.m. If friends so desire, donations can be made directly to a charity of their choice.
