ETHEL ISOBEL JONES Ethel Isobel Jones (nee Cloake) R.N., died in the Riverview Health Centre, Saturday, July 26, 2003 in her 80th year after suffering several months of pain due to an injured back and subsequently cancer. She is survived by her husband Harlo, her son Maldwyn of Maisons Laffitte, France, and her daughter Kathryn (Douglas Sprague) who devoted hundreds of hours to the loving care of her suffering mother thereby earning the enduring gratitude of her father. A second son, Rhys William Jones M.S.M., B.A., Ll.B., predeceased Ethel at age 52 having died November 8, 2002, also a victim of cancer. She leaves two brothers, Gordon of Peace River, AB and Gregory of Birtle, MB; five granddaughters, Laura and Nelly, daughters of Maldwyn, and Bronwyn, Brekyn and Rachel, daughters of Rhys. During her final illness her granddaughters, Laura (who came from France) and Brekyn assisted Kathryn greatly in her care. Ethel took her senior matriculation at City Park Collegiate in Saskatoon. While there she took an active part in musical activities. She had studied piano for several years and after graduation and while awaiting admission to nursing school she took vocal lessons. After her marriage and her children were growing she continued voice training in Winnipeg under Dorothy Lawson who accepted as her students only those who showed exceptional talent. For most of the rest of her life Ethel sang in choirs wherever her husbands career took them. Their travels included Great Britain, Europe, East Africa, New Zealand, Fiji, and Australia as well as many trips to various parts of the United States. After graduating as a Registered Nurse from the Nursing School of Saskatoon City Hospital she nursed for a time in the hospital of Milden, SK, and after her marriage to Harlo, in the Maternity Ward of Vancouver General Hospital. With her first pregnancy she abandoned her nursing career and ever after devoted her life entirely to her family. Her memory will be treasured by her husband as a loving wife and by her children as a devoted mother. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 2, at 10:00 a.m. at Westwood Presbyterian Church, 197 Browning Blvd. at Westwood Drive.
