MAUREEN SOUTHERN (nee GAULT) Maureen Southerns lifes journey ended peacefully at the age of 84 at the St. Boniface General Hospital on Tuesday, July 29, 2003. Maureen leaves behind to cherish her memories, her only child Bruce and wife Susan as well as grand-children, Sarah and Dirk. Maureen will also be sadly missed by her sister Dora Stitt (Frank) of Hot Springs, Arkansas. She was predeceased by her parents, James and Margaret Gault; sister Violet Kellington; brothers, James, Robert and Sam Gault. Her beloved husband Sam Southern predeceased Maureen in 1989. Maureen was born on December 22, 1918 in Belfast, Ireland and immigrated with her family to Canada at age 4. Maureen was an avid sportswoman who excelled in the games of hockey, baseball, bowling and golf. In 1935 Maureen was the Manitoba Ladies Horseshoe Champion. She was also a member of the Ladies Olympic Hockey Club, which won the Manitoba and Western Canada Championship in 1936-37. Maureen also distinguished herself in the game of bowling, winning many awards. It was through her love of sports that she met the love of her life, Sam. After the birth of their only child Bruce, Maureen continued to be active in the community by coaching hockey and score keeping for Little League baseball at the Riverview Community Centre. Maureen and Sam made their home in the Riverview neighbourhood and became members of the Winnipeg Canoe Club where Maureen continued to enjoy the game of golf until her 80th year. Cremation has already taken place. No formal service will be held, but please join her family in celebration of Maureens life and the sharing of memories between 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Friday, August 1 at Neil Bardal Inc., 984 Portage Ave., Aubrey Street entrance. In lieu of flowers if so desired donations may be made in Maureens memory to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 200 - 6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6, or a charity of your choice.
