THELMA CAREFOOT-MOWAT It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Thelma Carefoot-Mowat on July 30, 2003 at Third Crossing Manor, Gladstone. She will be deeply missed by her loving husband Sylvester; her children and their families, daughter Betty (Alec) Osvaths children, Karla (Bill) Shelton of Chicago and daughters, Samantha and Alexandra, and Kelly (Mark) Zamonski of Dayton, Ohio and son Alec; daughter Verla (Dave) McFarlane of Winnipeg and sons Doug (Keri), Steven, and Michael; son Jack (Chris) Carefoot of Lethbridge and children, Janna (Donavan), James, and Stuart; son Cliff Carefoot of Winnipeg; daughter Sherre (Clyde) Walker of Snow Lake and children, Tom (Recheal) and son Rylan, Tammy (Micheal) Sass and children Mikey, Lindy, Jordan, and Tessa-Lynn, and Travis Walker; four sisters, Ann Caragata of Toronto, Shirley Nagel of Regina, Mabel (Walter) Otto of Gladstone, and Evelyn Howe of Regina; three brothers, John Howe of Nanaimo, Bill (Barb) Howe of Glenworth, and Jim (Anne) Howe of Assinaboia; sisters-in-law, Del Howe of Regina, Barb Howe of Lethbridge, Alice Mowat of Gladstone, and Catherine Mowat of Gladstone; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Thelma was predeceased by her first husband Mervon Carefoot; infant son Larry; daughter Betty Osvath; son-in-law Alec Osvath; her parents, Martin and Florence Howe; brothers, Martin Howe, Tom Howe, and Patrick Howe; sisters-in-law, Lorraine Howe and Francis Caragata; father and mother-in-law, Sylvester and Alice Mowat; and brother-in-law Adam Mowat. Born in LaFleche, SK on September 4, 1915, Thelma was raised on the family ranch and educated in a one-room school house at LaFleche. After graduating from Teachers College in Regina in 1935, she taught school in rural Saskatchewan. In 1938, she married Mervon Carefoot and moved to the Gladstone area where they farmed and raised their children. Thelma taught in several neighbouring schools. In 1973, they moved into their new house in the town of Gladstone. Mervon passed away in December of 1975 and Thelma continued on with her teaching at the Riverdale Hutterite Colony. She enjoyed travelling and family gatherings. In 1979, Thelma and Sylvester Mowat were married and Thelma retired from teaching the following year. Thelma was a dedicated teacher and took an active role in the community. She was a member of W.I., U.C.W., Royal Purple (Honor Royal Lady), Legion No. 110, Legion Auxiliary Branch No. 110, Gladstone Seniors Drop In Centre, Gladstone Curling Club, and Gladstone Hospital Auxiliary, and read at Third Crossing Manor. The family would like to thank the staff of the Gladstone Hospital and Third Crossing Manor for the kind care our mother received. Viewing will be held on Friday, August 1 from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Clarkes Funeral Chapel, Gladstone. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 2 at 1:00 p.m. in the Christian Fellowship Church, Gladstone, with Pastor Randy Fehr officiating.
