Born: Jul 05, 1935
Date of Passing: Jul 29, 2003
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryFRED SCHULZ On July 29, 2003, at Grace General Hospital after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his wife Dorothy, his son Andrew, and Freds close friend Christel in Winnipeg, and by his brother Joachim and partner Irmgaard, his nephew Harald, wife Tina, their children Bianca and Meik, and his aunt Martha in Berlin, Germany. He was born July 5, 1935, in Berlin, Germany, the son of Max and Helene Schulz. Following an electro-mechanical apprenticeship in Germany as a teenager, he immigrated to Winnipeg in 1955. After several odd jobs, he was soon employed by the City of Winnipeg. During his working life there, he held many positions, beginning with life-guard at Sherbrook Pool, to Chief Engineer for Pan-Am Pool, and later, Co-ordinator of Maintenance for the Civic Properties Division. He retired in 1988 after 32 years of service and became a consultant to Bee-Clean Building Maintenance. His responsibilities with the City of Winnipeg and Bee-Clean, however, represented only a portion of his lifes activities and interests. He felt a need to excel at everything he attempted. His athletic endeavours included sky-diving, swimming, judo, target-shooting, and tennis, among many other things. Photography and writing were two of his major artistic pursuits. Photography was a lifelong passion that partly satisfied an earlier ambition of his to become a photo-journalist. Lacking any fluency in English when he arrived in Canada in 1955, he quickly achieved enough skill in the language to be offered a reporters job at the Regina Leader-Post by 1958. He travelled widely, and a favourite destination over a 35-year period was the American Southwest. His photography of the Hopi Indian settlements there contributed to his university studies in another abiding interest of his, anthropology. Above all, he took the greatest satisfaction from helping others. Numerous people throughout his life have benefited from his mentoring spirit. A private service was held on Friday, August 1. His family wish to express their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Tom Aldor and the staff of 3 West at Grace General Hospital for their excellent care and professionalism. Donations in honour of Freds memory may be made to the Grace General Hospital Foundation Palliative Care Program, 300 Booth Dr., Winnipeg, MB R3J 3M7.
