HELENE FUNK 1915 - 2003 It is with deep sadness and sorrow that the family announces the sudden passing of their beloved mother, Oma, Omi, sister and aunt, Helene (Berg) Funk, aged 88 years. Surrounded by her family, Helene passed away to be with her Lord and Saviour on Sunday, August 10, 2003. Helene was born on February 9, 1915 in the village of Kietchkas, Russia, to Katharina (Neufeld) and Abram Berg. She was predeceased by her husband and siblings Martin, John, Agatha, Henry and Peter. Helene is survived by her two children, Katharina (Ken) Krebs, Arthur (Anna) Funk; grandchildren Carolynn Krebs, Tina Krebs and Jeff Forrest, Jennifer Funk and Eric Funk; and three great-grandchildren Alexandra, Reed and Rachel Krebs Forrest. Also left to mourn her passing are two sisters, Katie Berg and Anne (Ron) Bartel; sisters-in-law Agatha Berg (Alberta), Elsa Berg (Germany), Louise Berg (Winnipeg) and their families; as well as many Neufeld family cousins in Saskatchewan and Germany, and Regier cousins in Manitoba. Helene and her family immigrated to Canada in June 1948, and settled in Winnipeg in 1950. For many years, Helene cared for elderly persons in her much loved home on Glenwood Crescent. She was a warm and generous person who loved to cook and spend time with her grandchildren. Helene was also a wonderful gardener with an amazing "green thumb". She had a strong faith in God that carried her through many challenges and sorrows, and sustained her through to the end. Helene was a long-time member of the Elmwood Mennonite Brethren Church, where she greatly enjoyed church services, singing German hymns and participating in the Seniors group. She also had many friends at the Gottesgemeinde (Church of God) where she enjoyed attending German services. A strong and active person for most of her life, Helene coped bravely with debilitating osteoporosis and osteoarthritis in her later years. Just prior to her passing, Helene was making a good recovery from hip surgery, and her family was preparing for her release from hospital. The family wishes to thank for their kindness and compassion, special homecare workers, Kim and Elsie, as well as the staff of Concordia Hospital, Ward 1 North, particularly Eva and Theresa. Memorial service will be held Thursday, August 14 at 10:30 a.m. at Elmwood Mennonite Brethren Church, 145 Henderson Hwy., Winnipeg. Interment and a graveside service will take place at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens, 4477 Main St., at 9:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Family Life Network, 225 Riverton Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2L 0N1.
