Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryVERA MAY SIMPSON (nee PAULSON) Vera May Simpson died peacefully at Victoria General Hospital on August 11, 2003. Vera was born May 10, 1917 to William, a CNR Station Agent, and Bessie Paulson and was raised in Wilmar and Kelso, SK and thence Moosehorn, MB. In 1948 she married student minister Allan Bryce Simpson. In 1951 the Reverend and Mrs. A.B. Simpson moved into the manse of Westworth United Church to begin a 20 year relationship of love and caring in that church community of Winnipeg. Vera was involved in many church activities and was a tremendous support to her husband in his pastoral care work. Retirement from Westworth in 1971, due to Allans health, led to a move to Fonthill and subsequently to Welland, ON. After being widowed in 1981 and suffering medical problems of her own in 1999, Vera returned to Winnipeg and took up residence at The Waverley. Vera was a selfless wife and mother, deriving her greatest joy in seeing her family members achieve their many milestones. While she enjoyed knitting and sewing, her greatest skill was in providing consistent love and support to her husband, and son Allan John, as they overcame major medical obstacles including open-heart surgery and polio, and as her three children grew to manhood, married and made lives for themselves. Vera loved the family cottage at LacLu, ON and she also enjoyed touring the United States and Canada by car and sleeping in a tent at campgrounds. Among her moments of greatest pride was when her husband was granted an Honourary Doctor of Divinity from University of Winnipeg and when her son Allan was made a member of the Order of Canada. Vera was predeceased by her husband, son Allan, her parents and brother Lloyd. She is survived by her brother Arnold; daughter-in-law Clare; sons, David (Shauna) and Don (Laurie-Anne) grandchildren, Andrea, Darrell, Julie, Katherine, James; great-grandson Brenden. A service to celebrate Veras life will be held at Westworth United Church, 1750 Grosvenor Ave. at Lanark Street on Friday August 15 at 1:00 p.m. If friends desire, donations in Veras memory may be made to either the Allan Simpson Memorial Fund, c/o ILRC, 311A-393 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3B 3H6 or the Westworth United Church Memorial Fund, 1750 Grosvenor Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3N 0H9.
