Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN EARL (JACK) VANCE 1912 - 2003 John Earl (Jack) Vance quietly passed away on August 12, 2003 at the Fred Douglas Lodge at the age of 91. He went to his final sleep peacefully with his wife, son and daughter-in-law at his side. He is survived by his loving wife, Ann (nee Lumsden), his brother Roy, his son Earl (Susan) and daughter Diana (Bob Ward) and the grandchildren, Liza Vance, Cheryl (Matt) Brough, Kathy Ward (Adam Scott) and James Ward, and his daughter Kelly Dyke (great-granddaughter). He is predeceased by his brother Alex and sister Edith. Jack was born on May 3, 1912 in Georgetown, ON and moved with his parents to Elva, MB at an early age. They subsequently moved to Winnipeg where he met and married Ann Lumsden. Ann and Jack had been married for 62 years. He was employed with the law firm of Tupper & Adams until he joined the Air Force at the onset of the Second World War and served in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland from 1941 to 1945. After being honourably discharged from the Air Force, he was employed for a number of years with Harold White Studios and then went on to be the gas and oil accountant with Trans Air. At the age of 55 he decided that he needed a change of profession and went to work for the University of Manitoba Chemistry Department as a stores man retiring at the age of 65 in 1977. In 1947, Jack and Ann moved into Weston, where they lived until 1975. He loved his grandchildren very much and was a caring grandfather, known as Papa. He was still quite active after his retirement. He enjoyed riding his bike especially on the Assiniboine Park bike path. With good friends Ralph and Louise Wade, Ann and Jack spent many enjoyable occasions at Ponemah Beach as well as travelling across Canada and the United States. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff of Spruce Unit at Fred Douglas Lodge for the exceptional care, respect and kindness provided to Jack throughout his stay on the unit. Following cremation, a memorial service will be held on Friday, August 15 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Johns Presbyterian Church, 251 Bannerman Ave. Interment will follow in Brookside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, should friends so desire, donations may be made in Jacks memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 6 Donald St., Suite 200, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6 or to a charity of your choice.
