SHIRLEY HANCOCK November 9, 1925 - July 24, 2004 On Saturday, July 24, 2004, Shirley Hancock (nee Aitken) passed away at the age of 78 years. Shirley was born on November 9, 1925, the daughter of Marguerite and William Aitken. She lived in Winnipeg until she married William Frederick (Bill) Hancock in 1951 and they eventually settled in Waterloo, ON. After Bills death in 1968, Shirley met many challenges. She completed her Senior Secretarial Course at Lougheed Business College in Kitchener, ON on June 30, 1969, graduating with Highest Honours and Shorthand Awards, and moved her family to Winnipeg where she began teacher training at Red River Community College. She taught for three months in Warren, MB then, for the rest of her teaching career, at Vincent Massey Collegiate in Fort Garry. She completed her Bachelor of Education at the University of Manitoba October 25, 1979. Following her retirement in 1993, Shirley received her Literary Braille Certificate and, over the next 10 years, accumulated 1700 volunteer hours at CNIB. She highly valued her membership with PEO, Chapter N, which spanned over 30 years, and she was a very active member of the Manitoba Historical Society. She was also active in the Clifton Ladies Bowling League. Shirley bravely met all of lifes many challenges with courage, determination, integrity and humour. Her strength and values greatly influenced all who knew her. Shirley leaves to mourn her daughters, Marguerite (David) Lipchen, Dr. B.J. Hancock; and her son Bill (Brenda) Hancock; grandchildren, David, Laurie Anne, Heather, Shawn and Devin; and great-granddaughters, Courtney and Maikaela. She also leaves to mourn her sister Roslyn Lecuyer; brother Bill (Marlene) Aitken; sisters-in-law, Betty Lamb and Jean (Meno) Lake; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Shirleys family would like to thank the staff at CancerCare Manitoba, Riverview Home Care (WRHA) and her family doctor Dr. Roland Hayward. As well, sincere thanks to the staff and friends at Childrens Hospital who supported B.J. throughout the past year so that she could spend more time caring for Mom at home. Viewing will take place on Tuesday, July 27 at 7:00 p.m. and a funeral service on Wednesday, July 28 at 2:30 p.m. at Thompson in the Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 1281 McGillivray Blvd., Winnipeg.
