HARRIET VALENTINE (nee CARSE) After a lengthy illness, Sarah Harriet Valentine passed away August 14, 2003, aged 97. She displayed remarkable courage, strength and resilience, never losing her sense of humour. She was born in Ireland January 20, 1906 and came to Winnipeg as an infant. Her early years were spent in Elmwood where her father operated a merchant tailor shop. Predeceased by her parents, James and Elizabeth Carse; husband Reg (Allen Gwynn Valentine) sisters, Margaret Bate (Guy) and Helen Bishop (Herb) and brothers, James and Henry. She attended St. Johns Tec and Success Business College and was active in Gordon King Memorial Church and CGIT. After a brief working career, she married Reg Valentine on February 14, 1931. Theirs was a long and happy marriage that saw them celebrate their 50th anniversary. Left to mourn is son Al (Bonnie) grandson David (Michelle) and daughter Pat Vipond; granddaughters, Tannis McKenzie (Scott) and Valerie Hornbaker (Chad) great-grandchildren, Joey, Thomas and Taylor. Mother was a wonderful loving and caring parent who took great delight and joy in her children and grandchildren. Surviving from her generation is her dear sister-in-law Mrs. Hettie Carse, widow of her brother Jim. Surviving nieces are Natalie MacDonald (Ross) of Winnipeg, Elaine Dumonceaux (Roland) of Minneapolis, and Diane Tyson (Hugh) of Salmon Arm. Surviving nephews include Edward Bate of San Francisco and Dennis Bishop (Carolynn) of Toronto. As a great-aunt, John and Nicole Dumonceaux were especially close to her, as she enjoyed their summer visits. The Valentines lived in various parts of the city, retiring to an apartment in Fort Garry. In 1967, they journeyed overseas to see the relatives and enjoy the sights of the old country. They visited the many Carses of County Down and Valentine relatives in Belfast and England. They enjoyed travel and made frequent trips to Fargo and Grand Forks. After Regs death in 1983, mother moved to Hamilton House in St. James where she lived independently with the help of home care till after her 95th birthday. Mother ended her days at Golden West Centennial Lodge. Words cannot express our thanks to Dr. Ian Maharaj and the staff of Golden West for their compassion and support over the past year. Flowers are gratefully declined. If you wish donations may be made in Harriets name to Golden West Centennial Lodge, 811 School Rd., Winnipeg, MB R2Y 0S8 or a charity of your choice.
