Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJEAN LAURIE (nee McCONKEY) 1904 - 2003 On Wednesday, August 20, 2003 at the Victoria General Hospital, Jean Laurie, aged 99 years, passed away. Jean was born in County Antrim, Northern Ireland on March 10, 1904. At the age of eight, she boarded the Titanic with her family to come to Canada, but because her siblings had the chicken pox, they were told they could not sail on it and would have to take the sister ship. Upon arrival in Winnipeg, she attended school and helped raise her younger siblings. At the age of 16 years, she met her husband-to-be, Robert (Bob) Laurie, and they married when she was 17 years old on April 2, 1921 in Dugald, MB. Jeans interests were cooking, crocheting, knitting and sewing, and she was known for her famous butterscotch pies. In later years, she worked in the kitchen at Bonar and Bemis Bag Factory for 26 years. Jean was predeceased by her parents, James and Jane; seven brothers and four sisters; husband Bob; son Gordon; and by her grandson Kenny. She leaves her memory to be cherished by her sister Ivy (Wilks) daughters, Mina (Sobie) and Verna (Marynuk) daughter-in-law Kay: 10 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Jeffrey Marynuk, Brett Marynuk, Tristan Stepnuk, Tanner Stepnuk, Gerald Stepnuk and Doug Laurie. A private family funeral service will be on Tuesday, August 26 at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. Interment to follow. As long as hearts remember, as long as hearts still care, we never part with those we love, they are with us everywhere. Till we meet again ...
