Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDANIEL JAMES SOSIAK Peacefully, on Tuesday, August 19, 2003 at the Portage District General Hospital, Daniel James Sosiak of Portage la Prairie, passed away at the age of 94 years. A celebration of Dans life will be held in the chapel of the Omega Funeral Home on Thursday, August 28 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at a later date. Dan was born on September 19, 1909 at Flat River, MI. In 1912, he moved with his family to Amaranth, MB and then to Rural Portage in 1919, where he was raised. In 1928, he finally settled on the homestead where he farmed for 60 years, retiring in 1988. He met and married Catherine Nazar, and together they raised two sons on the farm. In 1942, he enlisted with the Canadian Airforce and served in England, Belgium, Holland, France, and eventually in Germany. He received his discharge in April of 1946 and returned to farming. Dan started one of the first U-Pick strawberry farms in the Portage area and was instrumental in the forming of the Strawberry Growers Association of Manitoba of which he was president for many years. Dan enjoyed gardening and his love was square dancing. Predeceased by his wife Catherine; two brothers, Steve and Paul; three sisters, Anna, Elsie, and Mary; he leaves to mourn his passing his son John (Joyce) of Portage, grandchildren, Jennifer and Jeffrey; his son Jim (Judy) of Prince George, BC and grandchildren, Matthew, Steven, and Erin; and brother-in-law Fred Nazar of Portage; and several nieces and nephews. Should friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Central Plains Cancer Care Services, 318 Sask. Ave. East, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 0K8.
