JANE NICKEL (nee LOBBAN) November 27, 1898- August 24, 2003 Mom passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 24 at Misericordia Health Centre. Jean, as she was known to her friends, was born in Scotland and immigrated to Canada with her family when she was eight years old. The family lived briefly in Montreal, then travelled west to Manitoba where she remained for her very long life. She was the second of six children. Mom married Alvin Nickel in 1927 and they raised their four children during the Great Depression and the Second World War years. Mom and Dad shared a love of gardening and were prize winners with their projects. Mom was predeceased by Dad in 1959; her son Jim; and great-grandson Kevin Lohmer in 1990; and her beloved son-in-law Ken Simpson in November 2002. She was also predeceased by her sister Janet Carter; and brothers, Alex, William, and George Lobban. Left with memories of this amazing lady who lived on her own until one year ago, are her daughters, Norma Cooke (Allan), Marjorie Simpson, Audrey Tait (George Wolak) and daughter-in-law Alma Burnett (Ernie) thirteen grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson and her sister Lillian Smith. The family are very thankful to the Home Care workers, her kind neighbours at 60 Chesterfield, to the staff on Cornish 6, and special thanks to all on Cedar Grove (Cornish 5). Your caring and compassion was greatly appreciated. Funeral service will be held on Friday, August 29 at 11:00 a.m. in Garry Memorial Funeral Home, 1291 McGillvray Blvd. Interment will follow in Garry Memorial Cemetery.
