CATHERINE (CAYE) SCOTT On August 24, 2003, Catherine (Caye) Scott died at Grace Hospital, Winnipeg, at the age of 96 years. Caye was born in Winnipeg on June 13, 1907. She was predeceased by her parents, John Wesley and Elizabeth Jane (Matheson) Scott; brothers, Joseph, Ralph and George Scott; sisters, Mary (in infancy), Grace (Scott) Stewart and Rae Scott; sisters-in-law, Agnes and Daisy Scott and brother-in-law Peter Stewart. She is survived by her sister-in-law Helga Scott, four nieces and one nephew and their families. Caye was a direct descendant of the Selkirk Settlers and a great-granddaughter of Duncan McRae, the stonemason who built a number of Manitoba heritage sites. While Caye was still an infant, the family moved to a farm on the Portage Plains. She received her elementary education in rural Manitoba and Portage la Prairie, then attended the Portage Collegiate Institute, where she was a Governor-Generals Medallist in her final year. After obtaining her teaching certificate at Brandon Normal School, she earned two degrees from the University of Manitoba. Caye began her teaching career in rural schools, Edwin and Belmont, Manitoba, then taught in the Winnipeg School Division in several elementary and junior high schools. She was principal at Sir Sam Steele and Clifton Schools and ended her career as principal of Weston School. She also spent one year as an exchange teacher in Joliet, IL. As a longtime member of Delta Kappa Gamma International, Caye held positions at the local, national and international levels. Her interest in education, current affairs and history was reflected in her membership in several educational organizations, the University Womens Club, the United Nations Organization, the Laurier Club, the Liberal Party, the Lord Selkirk Association and the Manitoba Historical Society. For many years, she was a member of Westminster United Church. A memorial service to celebrate Cayes life will be held on Thursday, August 28 at 1:30 p.m. at Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway, Rev. Robert Campbell officiating. Cremation. Interment will take place at a later time in Kildonan Presbyterian Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations in Cayes memory may be made to the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Educational Foundation, the University Womens Club of Winnipeg Scholarship Trust Fund, or to a charity of their choice.
