JAMES GRAHAM PINCOCK, MD, FRCP (C), FACP 1919 - 2003 August 27, 2003 after a brief illness, peacefully, surrounded by his family at Victoria General Hospital. Graham is survived by his friend since childhood and wife for 60 years, Shirley (nee Gordon) his five children, Margaret Kavanagh (Bob), Helen Dartnell (Bill), Mary Cameron (Bruce), Gordon Pincock (Avis) daughter-in-law Linda Pincock; Don Pincock (Dawn) his 17 grandchildren; two adopted granddaughters; 13 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Margaret Gallimore and Olive Marion Shaw. He was predeceased by his brother George Pincock. Born in Winnipeg, November 16, 1919, the son of Dr. James Clayton Pincock and Olive Stothart, Graham grew up at 443 Dominion St. in Winnipeg. He attended Gordon Bell High School and entered the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba where he graduated in 1943 with honours. Graham joined the RCAF during the Second World War as a medical officer and was discharged as a Flight Lieutenant in 1946. He then set up a medical practice in Oak River, MB where he was the Municipal Doctor. Graham did his post doctorate in Internal Medicine and had a private practice in Winnipeg servicing St. Boniface, Deer Lodge and Grace Hospitals. He became head of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Deer Lodge Hospital and then head of Geriatric Medicine until 1967. He was a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Canada) and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. Through his avid and longstanding work with the United Church of Canada and United College he became Assistant to the President of the University of Winnipeg in 1967 and retired as Vice President, Planning and Development in 1981. Grahams passions in life were his best friend and wife Shirley, his family, his cottage, his faith and curling. Graham and Shirley met in 1930 when he was 10 and she was seven at Winnitoba. They became immediate best friends and were married on September 4, 1943 for 60 glorious years. Every summer was spent at the lake since 1930. They have been a cornerstone of the Winnitoba community and have touched many generations over the years. The lake and the people there have been the mainstay of their lives. Graham loved his curling and was an active member of Strathcona Curling Club and later Fort Rouge Curling club and his fun club, Three Sheets to the Wind, where he enjoyed his friends immensely. A person of strong faith, Graham was an active member of the United Church of Canada, particularly Rosedale United Church (Churchill Park). He served as Chairman of the United Church of Canada Board of Men from 1962 to 1968. Through his understanding of people, family and faith he helped guide many people through troubled times and personal challenges. A strong supporter of his community he helped establish the Scurfield scholarships at Churchill High School and was a major contributor. Graham loved his family and in his retirement thrilled at watching his grandchildren grow up and spread their wings. He was always their strongest supporter. His great-grandchildren were a special delight and kept the twinkle in his eye. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the doctors and staff of Victoria General Hospital for their outstanding medical and personal care. A very special thank you to Dr. Brian Sharkey who has been a dear friend, counsel and family physician to Graham and Shirley for many years. There is a time for medicine and a time for faith and family. Graham knew the perfect balance. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Grahams memory to the Victoria General Hospital Foundation or the charity of your choice. A celebration of Grahams life will be held on Friday, August 29 at 12:30 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. A reception will follow.
